What to Expect During a Windshield Replacement

When your windshield is damaged, it’s nothing short of annoying. But when the damage is extensive, it’s a real pain because you know you’ll have to replace the windshield. If you’re in this situation, we want you to take a breath and then keep reading. The information below will educate you on the windshield replacement process so you can move forward with confidence.

1. Find a Reputable Auto Glass Service

The first thing you want to do is start researching auto glass services in your area. Ask your family and friends, and don’t forget to check out reviews. Most auto glass companies will put their five-star reviews on their website, so it’s good to check Yelp and Google reviews to find an unbiased opinion.

2. Mobile or In-Shop?

Once you’ve decided which auto glass company you’ll be using, you’ll need to make an appointment. Some auto glass companies offer in-shop services only, others focus on mobile services where the technician comes to you, and some provide both.

Each service has its pros. If you’re looking for the most convenient option, mobile service may be the way to go. It allows vehicle owners to stay at home or have the tech show up at their workplace, avoiding time spent in a waiting room.

3. Remove the Old Windshield

When the mobile tech arrives at your location—or when you’re sitting in the waiting room of a shop—the technician will get right to work. First, they will remove any accessories, like your rearview mirror. Then, using specialized tools, the technician will carefully remove your old windshield.

4. Clean the Area

Once the windshield is removed and all the damaged glass has been discarded, the technician will clean the frame and clear it of any debris or rust before installing the new windshield.

5. Add the Adhesive

After the frame is clean, the technician will apply the adhesive. A reputable auto glass company will use a sealant approved by the AGSC (Auto Glass Safety Council). Don’t let the technician use a sealant that hasn’t been approved by the AGSC—otherwise, you could have problems down the road.

6. Install the New Windshield

Once the adhesive has been applied, the technician will install the new windshield using specialized tools. You may notice a mechanical arm or a suction cup or two.

7. Secure the Glass

Using pressure, the technician will ensure there is proper bonding between the frame and the glass. Then the tech will remove any excess adhesive and reinstall any trim pieces that were removed.

8. ADAS Calibration

If your vehicle has safety features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist, you’ll likely need an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) calibration. Many of the cameras, sensors, and other technologies in these systems are built into the windshield. For these systems to work properly, they must be recalibrated after a windshield replacement.

9. Technician Instructions

Once the technician is finished, they’ll give you care instructions, which you should follow exactly. For example, it’s not wise to drive your vehicle for an hour after having a new windshield installed—otherwise, you risk jostling it out of alignment. This required wait time is another reason some people prefer mobile auto glass services.
